NHS / NJHS

The ACS chapters of the National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society endeavor to have an open and transparent selection process in accordance with NHS/NJHS guidelines.  If you would like further clarification of the information contained in the section, please contact appropriate chapter sponsor (NHS: Mr Paul Eid peid@acsamman.edu.jo, NJHS: Mrs. Molly Van Cleave mvancleave@acsamman.edu.jo)

Students who are invited to apply to the NHS/NJHS have met the minimum academic requirement set by ACS (cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater).  Students who apply submit the necessary application to the NHS/NJHS chapter sponsor by the designated due date.

The chapter sponsor presents a list of candidates first to the Principal for review, then, once approved, to the faculty for confidential comments on individual candidates.   The sponsor convenes a meeting of the Faculty Council who review all applications and accompanying teacher comments and make decisions of selection or non-selection.  Within two weeks the Faculty Council reconvenes to reconsider all selections and non-selections.  Upon confirmation of the selected and non-selected students, the chapter sponsor presents the lists with the Principal for final approval. Shortly thereafter, letters are delivered to each selected and non-selected student.

The constitution of the NHS and NJHS states that an appeal process be in place. Since the Faculty Council at ACS reconsiders all selections and non-selections, the appeal process should be rare.  Should a student and parent feel they have been overlooked for membership they must appeal, in writing, to the principal within one week of the non-selection notification. Appeal letters need to be signed by both the student and the parent. The principal will then investigate to see if there was any error, omission, or impropriety in the selection process. Outcomes of an appeal can include (but are not limited to): (a) Reject: Rejection of the appeal; sustaining of the original FC judgment. Case may be appealed up the school hierarchy at this point; (b) Reconsider: Request from the principal for the Faculty Council to reconsider the case (although this will be rare because of the automatic reconsideration period already in place); and, (c) Overturn: A change in the decision of the FC, resulting in the selection of the student in question.
